The Third International Symposium on Arid Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ISACS-3) is to be held in Lanzhou, China, September 2010.
Accompanied by global continuous warming the distribution patterns of wet and dry areas have been changing. Frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events, such as drought, heat wave etc. are increasing and their impacts are expanding. Drought as well as the correlative social and economic issues have drawn more and more concerns of international communities. How to address to arid climate change and implement sustainable development are a great challenge for the whole world.
Northwest region of China, one of the most sensitive regions to global climate change, is hit by drought severely. So ISACS-3 held here in Lanzhou would be of great valuable for promoting researches on such areas all over the world. And it will play an active role in exchanging experiences and sharing research results, disscusing social and economic development in arid regions, and promoting cooperation among meteorologists and researchers worldwide.
The symposium focus on Responsing to Drought Challenge, including five themes: Technologies of monitoring, prediction and assessment on arid disasters, Observing and modeling of land surface processes in arid regions, Impacts of sand-dust aerosol on weather and climate, Rational utilization of climate and water resources in arid regions, and Characteristics and impacts of climate change in arid regions.
